Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stone Massage is a deeply relaxing, utterly blissful experience of receiving the normal benefits and enjoyment of massage, but with the extra element of heated stones.
It’s a delicious treat that’s good for you!
The Stones are a professional set of natural basalt rocks that have been polished to a smooth finish. A Hot Stone Massage Practitioner use these rocks because they hold heat well, and have a balancing effect on the energy systems in the body. They are heated in water to a specific temperature, and then held in the my hands while I’m giving the massage. Some stones are left sitting on the body at various points of the massage to more deeply relax and warm specific muscles.
I also use a very special Pounamu stone in my Hot Stone Massage (New Zealand Jade)
Pounamu is a sacred healing stone from our land that I work with to enhance the energy balancing properties of the other stones. I was given this Greenstone in exchange for some energy work/blessing on some land on the West Coast, here in New Zealand, and it originally came from the Hokitika area. It brings a whole energy balancing dynamic of its own, from opening the heart to helping with grounding and whatever is needed by the client.
An important note
Most photos you’ll see of Hot Stone Massage will feature a gorgeous model looking very relaxed with stones laid out all over her body. Most of these pictures don’t even have a masseur in them. It’s understandable that most people would think that’s what a Hot Rock Massage is! Indeed, some practitioners do sessions this way, but I do NOT leave you alone at any point with rocks on you. I massage you the entire time, changing the stones every few minutes so that there is a constant flow of heat, movement and pressure to bring maximum relief to tired, sore or restricted areas.
The Benefits of Hot Stone Massage
When I’m giving a Hot Stone Massage, I focus on balancing all levels…
- Balancing the energy flows up and down the body though the meridian system
- Improving the circulation of blood to and from the heart (similar to Lomi Lomi massage)
- Assisting Lymphatic Drainage and Detoxification
- Releasing physical tension and restrictions in the muscular and connective tissues
- Clearing stuck emotions or other patterns of tension from the whole BodyMind complex
My Massage experience
My training has involved many hours of practice, anatomy and physiology study, and learning from other professionals and teachers, but not through a mainstream ‘school’. For many years I just did relaxation style massage, which was enjoyable but never my true passion. But then one day I was offered a Hot Stone Massage, and I found my passion for massage!
I remember lying on the table thinking,
“I’m not telling any of my other practitioner friends about this woman, I want her to myself!.. Yeah right, of course I’m going to tell everyone about her, ‘cos this is HEAVENLY!”
Shortly after I was given a set of basalt massage stones, and I guessed it was probably time to get started! I had some wonderful support from my colleague Heloise Shand and with her advice and guidance, and my own research, I developed my own treatment and style.
ContraIndications
The only people who can’t have Hot Stone Massage are women in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, and anyone with a serious heart condition. If you feel any concern, we can proceed with caution and continue into a normal relaxation massage if we decide not to use the Stones.
A session can be one hour, or one and a half hours for a full body. The longer session is recommended as you receive the best overall treatment in 90 min, and because many people wish they had booked an hour and a half if they have to get off the table after only one hour! see my price schedule here

Dear Tania,
What a great blog ! Love you description of your work, I use normally Basalt Stones but got very interested in the Pounamu stone, do you have pictures of yours ? Just wondering if I can purchase them anywhere. I am in Brazil.
Thanks
Luiz Miranda
Hi Luiz,
Thankyou for your lovely comment! Pounamu is New Zealand Jade, so perhaps you have something similar in Brazil? I’m not sure. I don’t have a picture of my own Pounamu but I will try to find you some when I get home from my trip. Blessings 🙂
