Some Belief Systems are more BS than others, in my Belief System!
I have become fascinated with an idea that is being scientifically proven now – your experience of the world is created through what you believe. I had an experience with a partner that validated this for me so clearly I couldn’t deny it.
I was with this man for nearly 2 years, and it was one of the best relationships I’ve ever had. And definitely the WORST. There was so much affection, love, depth, magic and spiritual connection. The big problem? His jealousy and paranoia. He would challenge me constantly about what I had been doing, and found it impossible to trust my faithfulness. I knew I was faithful, and I kept trying to convince him, and heal the hurt that I knew he was carrying. Obviously, that didn’t work, or this story would have a different ending!
Here’s what really opened my eyes to this. We would be out, and I’d do something really simple and normal like go to the toilet. Something you don’t think twice about anyway. I’d come back a few minutes later and he would ask me where I’d been for the last hour and in his mind he’d created a whole story, and actually seen me disappear with someone.
Naturally, I thought he was just being dramatic and troublesome at first, but slowly it dawned on me that he really believed it.
It was real for him. 5 minutes WAS an hour in his reality. He really DID see me sneaking away with someone else. I saw this happen many times, and such an intense change of energy with it that I still feel very strongly that although he was making it all up, he wasn’t making it up! His entire state of being completely changed with this overwhelming thought.
We all get this on some level I think. We’ve all experienced it, we’ve been at the exact same events as other people but we all saw a different thing, heard someone say something clearly that they swear they never said…or imagine what they might be saying and feel an emotional response to that even though it hasn’t happened. We jump in the dark because a light shade looks like a person for a split second.
What we know about our senses and our brains, is that we take in the world through our senses, and we process that in the brain – according to what we know, believe to be true or have experienced before. Everything we see, hear, taste, touch and smell is filtered before we actually have the experience of it. So it seems to me like, if you want your experience to be primarily good, start by looking at your basic beliefs about stuff. I don’t just mean ‘what you think’. I mean what’s buried in the subconscious.
Getting right down to the real nitty gritty
It’s been said that we form most of our beliefs about the world by the age of 3. That’s quite staggering when you really stop to think about it. How can we be conscious at all of the beliefs we formed before we could even remember having a conscious thought?
So to access these ‘programs’ that are running in our lives, creating our perceptions of reality, we need to be able to access the subconscious mind. There are a few ways to do this
- Looking deeper into patterns
- A good reading with a clear person
I mention these few because I have personal experience with all of them, but there are other therapies that can do the same. The main thing is, it’s not about trying to figure anything out by going over and over it. What we want is to uncover the key memory, moment or story that creates an ‘aha’ feeling for us. “Oh so that’ s why I am the way I am! No wonder I formed that belief about the world, with all I had going on then” Once it has been clearly seen, it’s a matter of letting it go. The easiest way I know for letting go of these unhelpful ‘stories’ as you find them is with BodyTalk. Read more about BodyTalk Here
When we do a BodyTalk session, we don’t look for specific things. We ask the innate wisdom of the body to show us exactly what we need to let go of right now, and it is the perfect timing for us to move forward from the things that come up. It means there’s no more guessing if we are on the right track, and it also means we don’t have to do endless reliving, rehashing or recreating past traumas. We might feel it strongly for a moment, and then it is simply done. Unravelled, or at least unravelling. There’s a feeling of lightness and freedom, and somehow we can experience life in a different way. Read more about Your Body’s Innate Wisdom Here
A wee story from my subconscious
This memory showed me a fundamental belief I had formed about money:
In the BodyTalk session I was having, we came to an Active Memory about money. We started doing the process, and something popped into my head. A memory from when I was maybe about 7, and my Dad had just sold a car for $200. He showed us the 2 $100 bills, and I felt like I was looking at SO MUCH MONEY! As we were tapping it out, I realised that there had been so few times I’d ever had more than $200 spare cash in my life. I made ends meet, and then that was about it. I could manifest money for things I felt purposeful about (courses and so on) but I could hardly remember ever having spent over $200 on myself.
It was very liberating! and kind of humorous too. Now it’s just ‘one strand in the money knot’, but it was a very important one! It made sense to me, it resonated, and that’s the kind of ‘aha’ moment we want to happen.
Thank Goodness I don’t have to figure it all out!
I would feel so overwhelmed if I had to try and think all this through! Or talk it all out endlessly! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE talking, and I think people need to talk – but it takes a special kind of moment, and a very good counsellor to be able to tap into ‘the underneath’. I had a great counselling session once with a woman who got me to describe my family members as if they were all animals – yeah sounds silly, but actually I understood each member of my family so much better! I had tapped into the language of symbolism, which gets us unlocking the creative potential in our brain. But the other sessions I had left me feeling very very lonely, and like I had stirred up the feelings, but I didn’t know what to do with them after that, and it sure didn’t make them any easier.
I love the process of working with the subconscious mind to discover what we need to know, and let go of it at the source, like pulling a weed out by the roots. Find out more about my work here
